Walter “Jay Son” Somerai is a Bulawayo Christian rapper born in Kwekwe, Zimbabwe in 1994. He first recognized his talent himself when he featured on a track “On to the top” by Donny Chords (FKA Don La’Dew). He was just told to give his 16 bars and he wasn’t even ready, in fact, he had just accompanied them to the studio. Nevertheless, he did the verse and the track was received well from his immediate circles, although it was not gospel. Jay SON did not feel comfortable with this. He then recorded “My All” with Don La’Dew and Frank Zibz which was also received well earning them best performance of the concert at Covenant of God Worship Centre Kenta 7, Bulawayo. Jay SON proceeded to record his first project “BlackROSE EP” with Velocity records which was released on 22 January 2015 by his label XZIST to ReverbNation. It earned him number 1(according to ReverbNation) on Bulawayo Charts across all genres. It had 7 tracks which including My All, Fly Away and Good to be in Christ. Most of the tracks where samples. Jay Son did the whole engineering and mastering to the project. He has performed live numerous times on big stages with major churches like Celebration Church (Night of Arts 2014) and Christ Embassy (Day of Bliss 2015) and recently at H.I.T.s 10th Anniversary.
Jay SON was born is Kwekwe but spent most of his childhood life moving from city to city. When he was less than a year old his family and him shifted to Harare where they only spent 4 years. When Jay SON was now 4 years old they shifted back to Midlands, this time settling in Gweru where he spent a great deal of his life. He attended Stanley Primary School from Grade 1 to Grade 3. He then shifted to Matongo Primary school up to Grade 6 before transferring to Bata Primary school to write his Grade 7 examinations. Jay SON was always a bright child obtaining himself 4 units at Grade 7. He proceeded to Kwekwe High School where he wrote his Ordinary Levels passing all the subjects. He then shifted to Bulawayo where he did his Advanced level (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry) and passed all his subjects. The boy also very active in community service; He was Honorable Junior Councilor in Bulawayo 2012-13. He also participated in the 2013 GrabCAD SuperCar design challenge (Europe). Jay SON together with Tinashe Makuti founded Love God Hate Sin Christian Foundation, a movement engaging young people of Bulawayo to be conscious of God and respect his will. This same period is when Jay SON’s parents divorced and this left him very sad. He turned to Hip-Hop as a source of comfort as he was now being constantly abused. He then came up with his stage name, the then J’SON which means Jehova’s Son. He then edited to Jay SON but retaining the meaning of his name.
Jay SON founded his own label XZIST with his colleagues from Bulawayo. He worked with Dj Face and Velocity records in producing his first project. He got accepted into the Harare Institute of Technology in August 2014 where he is currently studying Computer Science. Jay SON also won his Students Representative Council elections for Secretary of Academics 2015-16. He is the first and current president of Thando-Artic Club, which is an arts club he is a co-founder of. Jay SON worked with Zimbabwe’s best producer, Xndr on the hit track Bayasenzani. The track earned him two interviews with Prometheus on Zim Hip-Hop Report, one interview on Nhau-Indaba News, a cover to Zim Rap Cities magazine (December issue) and a record deal with Rehab Entertainment. The track was number 9 on the “best of 2015” chart by Zim Rap Cities. Jay SON participated on a very formal and noble event, the 10th Anniversary of his University and also performed in front of Zimbabwe’s president during the 6th graduation day of his university, the Harare Institute of Technology.
